During the school year, Christopher attends Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. He expects to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in biology in the spring of 2020 and then go on to graduate school to get his doctorate in physical therapy. Christopher was looking for summer employment near his hometown and heard from the current president of the local bike group, the Northern Allegheny Mountain Bike Association (NAMBA) about the Hand Finisher position available through Dirt Artisans at the Jakes Rocks Trailbuilding Project. Already familiar with the Trails At Jakes Rocks (TAJR), which he enjoys riding and hiking, Christopher was excited to become a part of the trailbuilding process and learn how to build trails.
As a Hand Finisher, Christopher works behind the machines to remove foliage and shape the trail using a rake, hoe, loppers and hand saw. He also transports trailbuilding equipment using a Utility Vehicle and CanyCom and helps to build wooden bridges and rock crossings in wet areas. Christopher enjoys the physical challenges of the job and being out in nature all day and feels great when he can get the water to flow perfectly through the rock armored sections. When not hand finishing at the Jakes Rocks Project or attending college classes, Christopher likes to spend his time biking, camping, playing soccer and working out.
